Four matches were played on Thursday afternoon in Tokyo on the ATP 500 Series tournament.
First on the court were Jordan Thompson of Australia and the home crowd favourite Taro Daniel. The Japanese player broke his opponent’s serve right away and had a couple of more break points throughout the opening set. Thompson had no chances to break back as Daniel won 92% of his first-serve points.
The second set was more equally matched, so we entered a tiebreak after almost one full hour of play. Daniel got to a sizable lead early on and easily secured his first Tokyo quarterfinals. The final result was 6–4, 7–6.
He will meet next another Aussie, John Millman, who won in straight sets against Lloyd George Harris of South Africa (6–3, 6–2). Millman was in control right from the beginning and won most of the points when Harris wasn’t able to put in his first serve.
In the most anticipated match of the day, the third seed David Goffin took on the young Canadian Denis Shapovalov. As neither of the players managed to break each other’s serve, the first set went into a tiebreak. Goffin won six of the opening seven points and had five straight set points, but Shapovalov fought back and made it 6–5.
Finally, Goffin converted on his final set point and took the opening frame. The second set was almost identical to the first one, and both players prepared for another tiebreaker. Goffin again led by 6–1, but this time managed to convert on his second set and match point to book his place in the final eight.
Goffin’s opponent in the quarterfinals will be the Korean Hyeon Chung, who made the biggest upset of the day by beating the sixth seed Marin Čilić of Croatia. It took five break points for Chung to break Čilić in the third game, and the Korean held on to his own serve, not giving Marin much of a change until the end of the opening set.
In the second set, we saw a much better performance from Čilić, especially on his first serve. The Croatian broke early and held on to bring the match to a decider. However, the third set was completely one-sided, as Chung won it 6–1 with ease. He was better in all statistical parameters.
