Euro 2020 Qualifications – Switzerland Beats Ireland, Spain Qualifies After a Draw

The final day of the October qualifications for Euro 2020 was full of exciting games. The draw against Sweden was enough for the Spaniards to qualify for the final tournament, and they are also likely to win Group H. Berg scored a goal in the 50th minute to give Sweden the lead, and it looked like they might get away with a big victory. However, Rodrigo spoiled the fun for the home fans as he scored in added time to make it 1–1 at the end.

Sweden is now second with one point in front of Romania and four points above Norway. Romania and Norway played 1–1 in a packed stadium in Bucharest. The game had a similar development as the one between Spain and Sweden. Romania missed a penalty in the 52nd minute, but they did manage to score first only ten minutes later through Mitrita. Sorloth scored for Norway in the second minute of added time to keep them in the race for the playoffs.

Finland won a crucial game against Armenia (3–0) and are now only one win away from qualifying. They just need to beat Liechtenstein at home in November. Bosnia and Herzegovina lost 2–1 to Greece in Athens after Kovačević scored an own goal in the 88th minute. Bosnia, Greece, and Armenia will now fight for a playoff spot since Finland and Italy are likely to be the top two teams in Group J.

The situation in Group D is reaching its boiling point after Switzerland managed to win 2–0 against Ireland at home. Seferović gave Switzerland the lead, while Duffy scored an own goal in the added time to confirm Ireland’s loss. Ireland is still at the top of Group D, but now they have the same number of points as Denmark and only one point more than Switzerland, while also having one more game played.

Ireland plays its final game of the qualifications against Denmark in November. Georgia still has theoretical chances to qualify for the playoffs after barely beating Gibraltar 3–2.

Israel won an important game against Latvia 3–1 and now have the same number of points as Slovenia and North Macedonia in Group G. These three teams will likely fight for the playoff spot, although they technically still all have a shot at qualifying directly.

UEFA Euro 2020 qualifications continue on November 14.
