Euro 2020 Qualifications – Ukraine Upsets Portugal; Turkey and France Tie

After earning a point in Portugal at the beginning of the qualifications, Ukraine has now made another upset against the reigning European champions and beat them at home 2–1.

Yaremchuk scored the opening goal after a corner kick in the sixth minute, while Yarmolenko doubled Ukraine’s lead some 20 minutes later. Portugal struggled to find the back of the net, although they were a better team stats-wise. Ronaldo scored from a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, but Portugal failed to equalise.

Ukraine secured the top spot in Group B, while Portugal is now only one point in front of Serbia, who managed to beat Lithuania.

England annihilated Bulgaria in Sofia by scoring six goals, four of which came in the first half. However, they are still not booked for the Euro, as they need a win against Montenegro in November. Czechia expects a crucial game against third-placed Kosovo who beat Montenegro 2–0 at home and are at least guaranteed a playoff spot.

Turkey is still at the top of Group H after playing 1–1 against France in Paris and winning a huge point. Giroud’s header gave France the lead in the 76th minute, but Turkey equalised only six minutes later through Ayhan who was barely on-side.

Island beat Andorra 2–0 at home, but they needed Turkey to lose in order to have a better shot at qualifying directly. Now they play Turkey in November, but even a win doesn’t save them from being in a tough spot since they are four points behind France and Turkey, and only three points in front of Albania who cruised past Moldova 0–4 and are hoping for a playoff spot.

The October qualifications continue today with teams from groups D, F, G, and J taking action on stadiums all across Europe.
