The first game of the third round took place in Madrid, where Atletico hosted Bayer Leverkusen. Morata was Atletico’s hero after he placed a beautiful header behind the goalkeeper’s back in the 78th minute to set the final score.
Juventus was on the brink of defeat at Allianz Stadium in Turin, but they somehow managed to escape with all three points. Miranchuk scored the opening goal for Lokomotiv Moscow, while Dybala single-handedly turned things around in the late stages of the game, scoring two fantastic goals in three minutes.
Shakhtar played an intense game against Dinamo Zagreb in Kharkiv that ended in a 2–2 draw. Konoplyanka scored the opening goal for the home squad in the 16th minute, but Olmo equalized only nine minutes later. Oršić gave Croats the lead from the penalty in the 60th minute, and Dodo set the final score after a beautiful pass from Allan 15 minutes prior to the final whistle.
Manchester City recorded a convincing 5–1 victory against Atalanta at home, although they were behind after Malinovsky’s penalty. Aguero soon equalized and scored a penalty of his own to give his team the lead at halftime. Sterling scored a hat-trick in the second half to give the Citizens their third win of the competition.
PSG had no trouble fighting off Club Brugge in Belgium. Icardi scored after only seven minutes, but that was the only goal of the first half. Mbappe and Icardi put PSG up 3–0 with 30 minutes left in the game, while Mbappe scored two more times before the end.
Real Madrid recorded their first win of the Champions League season after beating Galatasaray 1–0 in Turkey. Toni Kross scored the only goal in the 18th minute.
Olympiakos was looking to upset Bayern Munich on their home turf, and they looked to be doing great after El Arabi gave them the lead in the 23rd minute. Lewandowski equalised and then scored once more in the second half to give Bayern the lead. Tolisso extended the visiting team’s lead. When it seemed the game was over, Guilherme scored a second goal for Olympiakos. However, they couldn’t equalise until the final whistle and Bayern escaped with a win.
Red Star was no match for Tottenham, who seem to be coming out of a slump they experienced at the beginning of the season. Kane, Sun, and Lamela scored to give them a comfortable 5–0 victory.
